Rutgers investigates have developed a tool to help neurologists screen for obstructive sleep apnea( OSA) in parties with epilepsy whose seizures can be magnified by sleep disorders.
The study appears in the journal Neurology Clinical Practice.
Although detection and medicine of OSA can improve seizure power in some patients with epilepsy, providers have not regularly estimated patients for those working determining factor. The investigates developed an electronic health preserve alarm for neurologists to evaluate a patient’s need for a sleep study.

The researchers developed an assessment for identifying OSA consisting of 12 distinguished determining factor, which are embedded in the electronic health chronicle. ” It was found that sitting this mandatory notify for providers to screen for OSA in the EHR markedly increased the detecting of at-risk epilepsy patients who should be referred for a sleep study ,” says co-author Xue Ming, PhD, MD, prof of neurology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.” Such screening can be achieved through early sensing and treatment, which will improve the quality of life of patients with epilepsy and OSA .”
In lawsuits that were reviewed prior to the alarm being placed in the electronic state register, only 7% with epilepsy were referred for sleep examines. Of those who were referred, 56% were diagnosed with sleep apnea. Of the 405 patients who were screened for OSA after the alarm was placed under the electronic health register, 33% had at least two risk factors and were referred for a sleep survey. Of the 82 patients who accomplished a sleep contemplate, 87% demo at least slight sleep apnea.
